TEFL Course Syllabus

The course syllabus is carefully designed to create a balance between theory, hands-on teaching practice, and reflective learning. This will ensure that you gain the knowledge and skills needed to become an effective English teacher.

The entire course is divided into six key areas, each focusing on essential aspects of English language teaching. Let us take a look at these areas:

1. Teaching Practice

This is the core focus of our TEFL program and the most practical component.

  • You will teach real students of English in various settings, such as English conversation schools, public elementary schools, universities, and private preschools.
  • Each session is designed to help you apply teaching methodologies, lesson planning techniques, and classroom management skills learned during input sessions.
  • After each lesson, you will receive constructive feedback from experienced trainers to help you improve and grow as a teacher.

This practical experience closes the gap between theory and practice, enabling you to handle classroom situations with confidence.

2. Foreign Language Experience

Understanding what it feels like to learn a new language is a powerful tool for any teacher.

  • Trainees will receive instruction in an unknown foreign language, experiencing first-hand the challenges and breakthroughs of language learning.
  • This exercise creates empathy between teacher and student, helping you understand your learners' struggles and triumphs.
  • This reflection will make your teaching more patient, adaptive, and sensitive to the needs of your students.

3. Language Awareness

This section focuses on grammar and phonology, which are the two fundamental aspects of English language teaching.

a. Grammar

  • You will cover key grammar topics, including parts of speech, tenses, conditionals, modals, and sentence structure.
  • Learn how to break down complex grammar rules and teach them in a clear and engaging way to students at different levels.

b. Phonology

  • Explore phonemics, word and sentence stress, intonation, and connected speech.
  • Understand how to teach pronunciation effectively and help students sound more natural in their spoken English.

Both components will give you a solid foundation in language mechanics, helping you become a confident and knowledgeable teacher.

4. Student Profile

This area focuses on one-on-one teaching and understanding individual learner needs.

  • You will work closely with a single student over three meetings to build rapport, identify strengths and weaknesses, and address specific learning needs.
  • Develop a customised lesson plan tailored to your student's goals.
  • Deliver a one-on-one lesson and complete a reflective written report about the experience.

This section helps you develop skills in error analysis, correction techniques, and targeted lesson planning.

5. Teaching Techniques

This section equips you with practical strategies and tools for effective classroom teaching. Topics covered include:

  • Lesson Planning: Design structured, engaging, and goal-oriented lesson plans.
  • Classroom Management: Learn how to maintain a positive and productive classroom environment.
  • Establishing Rapport: Build trust and mutual respect with students.
  • Discipline in the Classroom: Handle challenging situations calmly and professionally.
  • Teaching Vocabulary and Grammar: Use creative methods to teach essential language components.
  • Teaching Receptive Skills: Guide students in improving reading and listening comprehension.
  • Teaching Productive Skills: Encourage students to enhance their speaking and writing abilities.
  • Interactive Learning: Integrate games, songs, and activities into your lessons for better engagement.
  • Adaptability: Adjust your teaching style for beginner learners, group lessons, and individual sessions.

This section ensures you are prepared to handle different classroom scenarios with professionalism and creativity.

6. Materials Project

In this practical project, you will design and present your own teaching materials.

  • Create a set of teaching aids and resources that are portable, durable, and adaptable for different lessons.
  • Present your materials to a course trainer, demonstrating how they will be used in a classroom setting.
  • Receive feedback and suggestions to improve your materials and make them more versatile.

This project encourages creativity and resourcefulness, essential qualities for any ESL teacher.

How It All Comes Together

Each of these six areas works together to build a strong foundation in teaching English as a foreign language. Through practical teaching sessions, reflective exercises, and theory-based learning, you will develop the skills needed to teach effectively in public schools, language centres, or private tutoring settings.
